Eleonora di Toledo, Duchess of Florence
Bronzino, 1545. Uffizi Gallery, Florence.
The Technique
A craftsmanship that once adorned the Duchess of Florence
In Bronzino's famous portrait at the Uffizi, Eleonora di Toledo, Duchess of Florence, wears a delicate gold net across her chest and shoulders. That gold mesh is called reticella d'oro, "the little golden net," one of the rarest textile techniques in the world. Its roots go back to ancient Greece and it was brought to Florence during the Renaissance.
Every bridal piece I make is hand-knitted from a single wire using this same tradition, which I call plekta d'oro. Intricate to look at, and light enough to forget you are wearing it. Each piece is one of a kind and cannot be replicated.
